Norman Skole

Norman Skole Passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, October 21, 2007. Mr. Skole was a long time resident of Indianapolis and an active member of the community. He was born to John & Bertha Skole in Pittsfield, MA Novemeber 19, 1925. Called to duty during World War II, he served with the 311th Infantry Regiment in the European theater. He was wounded in the line of duty, for which he received the Purple Heart. After the war he returned to his education under the GI Bill, finishing his undergraduate degree at Purdue and completing a Master's degree in Social Work at Indiana University. Norman served several years at Carter Hospital as a clinical social worker. In 1959 he became the Executive Director of the Marion County Mental Health Association, which he directed for 33 years until his retirement in 1992. Norman helped remove the dark stigma of mental illness to clinical practice as an illness deserving sympathy, care and treatment. Under his leadership in Indianapolis, the Christmas Gift Lift was created to provide holiday giving to those hospitalized with mental illness. He led the efforts to create a halfway house for people re-entering society aftet treatment and a suicide prevention hotline, one of the first in the country. Norman served as the President of the National Mental Health Association, receiving recognition and praise from honorary chair Rosalyn Carter, among others. Norman was a loving and genuine father and husband. He is survived by his brother, Robert (Monika)Skole; children, Dr. David Skole, Mark (Colleen) Skole, Susan (Jeff) Wilson: grandchildren, Jorden, Ben, Nathan and Evan Skole, Fawn and Kyrstin Wilson. A celebration of Norman's life for all friends and family will be held at the Indianapolis Art Center, Marilyn K. Glick School of Art, 820 East 67th Street, Indianapolis on 21 December from 5:30-8:00PM.
