Civil War Veteran Dies At Age Of 79

Charles Ingraham, 79, veteran of the Civil War died yesterday afternoon at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. McKeon of 68 Ontario Street.

He was born in New Ashford and at the age of 16 years enlisted in the 16th New York Artillery at Peekskill, New York and served in the war for several years. He was a carpenter by trade and lived in Cheshire. He moved to this city in 1905.

He was a member of Rockwell Grand Army Post and leaves besides his widow, who is his second wife, two sons, Henry of this city and William of North Adams; three daughters, Mrs McKeon, Mrs. Nellie Pike and Mrs. Samuel Dorgan of this city and four grandchildren. A grandson Lieut. Charles Ingraham, was a member of Co. F of the second regiment and served with distinction in Mexico. He died several years ago. Mr Ingraham was a member of the Methodist church in Cheshire.

The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the home with Rev. M. Stephen James officiating and at 3:30 at the Methodist church in Cheshire. Burial will be in Cheshire.

Oldest Member of Hopkins Post was With General Sherman On Famous March to Sea

David Ingraham, a veteran of the Civil War and a life long resident of this section, died at his home in New Ashford Friday night following an extended illness.

Mr. Ingraham was the oldest living member of E. P. Hopkins post, Grand Army of the Republic and the only member who was with General Sherman when he made his famous march from Altanta to the sea.

Born in New Ashford 87 years ago, Mr. Ingraham has spent practically all his life, with the exception of the period during which he was a incluber of the Grand Army in that section. One of the best known men in New Ashford, he was well liked and highly respected by all who knew him, and his death will be mourned by many. During the Civil War he was a member of the 141st New York volunteers.

He is survived by two daughters, one of whom lives in Ashford and the other in Cheshire, and one son in Waterford, N.Y. He is also survivied by several grandchildren.

The funeral will be held from his late home tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. W. R. Stocking, chaplain of Hopkens post, officiating. Members of Hopkins post will meet at Grand Army hall at one o' clock and will proceed in a body to the Ingraham home to attend the funeral.

Veteran's Funeral Held in New Ashford

The funeral of David A. Ingraham was held in his late home in New Ashford yesterday afternoon, a goodly number of neighbors gathering to do him honor. Six of his comrades of E. P. Haskins post, G. A. R., Williamstown were present and tenderly laid him to rest on the hillside where his wife, companion of 63 years, was laid at rest last February. As his own flag was held over his open grave the beautiful ritual of the order was given by Comrades Fowler and Stocking. The latter conducted the services at the home when the Baker sisters sang most effectively the comrade's favorite hymn "When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder I'll Be There" and "He Leadeth Me". Following Mr. Stocking's address, W. G. Mitchell told briefly of Sherman's march from Atlanta to the sea, in which Mr. Ingraham 's regiment, the 141st New York took part.

Mr. Stocking spoke in part as follows: David Ingraham was born just over the mountain here in New Ashford on the eighth day of July, 87 years ago, and spent most of his life among the Berkshire hills, and for 63 lived in the little house in this peaceful valley where he breathed his last.He was a good neighbor, a devoted husband and a kind father. His grandfather Benjamin Ingraham, was a soldier in the Revolutionary war and in the summer of 1864 the grandson, then living in New York state, followed in the footsteps of his grandsire. We of Hopkins post almost envied him the distinction of being with General Sherman's army in that famous march to the sea. He loved the flag and the comradship of those who like him, helped to save the nation.

For many years he gathered large quantities of running evergreen from these hill sides and with Comrade Goodell brought them in bags to the Grand Army hall where the former Women's Relief corps made them into wreaths to be placed on the soldier's graves on Memorial day. Next May his grave will be among those to be strewn with fragrant flowers.

Frank W. Ingraham

Frank W. Ingraham 28, died last night at his home on Robbins Avenue following a two week illness with double pneumonia. He is survived by a widow, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ingraham of Williamstown, three sisters, Mrs. Edward Chase, Mrs Nellie Pike, and Mrs. Samuel Dorgan all of this city and two brothers, Henry of this city and William of North Adams. Mr. Ingraham was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive engineers and was employed on the Boston and Albany Railroad. No funeral arrangements have been made.

Henry Clinton Ingraham

Henry Clinton Ingraham 84, a former resident of Pittsfield, died Saturday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clarence Launt of West Stephentown, N.Y.

Besides his daughter, Mrs. Launt, he leaves a brother William of Pittsfield; two sisters, Mrs. Samuel Dorgan and Mrs. Clifford McKeon, both of this city; a grandaughter, Mrs. Curtis Beaton of Moultonboro, N. H., and seveeral nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 from the home of Mrs. Launt. Rev. Morgan S. Post will officiate. Burial will be in Cheshire.

Mrs. Nettie Dorgan

Mrs. Nettie Dorgan, 95, formerly of 574 East St., died yesterday at the Springside Nursing Home after a long illness. She was the widow of Samuel H. Dorgan.

Born in New Ashford, she spent most of her life in Pittsfield. Mrs. Dorgan was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

She leaves two nieces, Mrs. William G. Peters of Lenox and Mrs. John Shadick of Gulfport, Fla. Friends may call at the Meechan Funeral Home tonight 7 to 9.

Services will be tomorrow morning at 10 at the funeral home. The Rev. Robert W. Hannum, pastor of the First United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Cheshire Cemetery.

Mrs. Mary I. McKeon

Mrs. Mary I. McKeon, 78 of 14 Cliff Ave. died yesterday afternoon at St. Luke's Hospital. She was the widow of Charles C. McKeon.

Mrs. McKeon was born in Lanesboro and moved to Pittsfield from Cheshire 61 years ago. She attended the First Methodist Church.

She leaves two daughters, Mrs Melvin Whitham with whom she made her home and Mrs. William G. Peters both of Pittsfield, a sister, Mrs Samuel Dorgan of this city; two grandchildren, a great-grandchild and two nieces.

Services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 at the Wellington Funeral Home. Burial will be in Cheshire Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today and tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.

Mrs. May Launt

Mrs. May Launt West Stephentown, N. Y.

Mrs. May Launt, 73, widow of Clarence E. Launt, died Tuesday at Pittsfield General Hospital after a long illness, She was born July 15, 1890 in Berkshire, Mass., and lived here for 40 years.

Mrs. Launt was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Pittsfield, a worker of the Stephentown Center Baptist Church, a member of the Stone Bridge Community Club, the Taconic Valley Grange and the auxillary of the Sgt. W. A. Adams American Legion Post 1021, Averill Park.

In addition to several cousins she is survived by an aunt, Mrs. Nettie Dorgan of Pittsfield; two nieces, Mrs. Curtis Beaton of Pine Plains and Mrs. Jessie Haley of Stephentown; and two nephews, Donald Launt of Pittsfield and Fayette Ellsworth of West Stephentown.

Calling hours at the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home in Stephentown will be tonight. Funeral services will be tomorrow at 2 with the Rev. Walter B. Jerge, rector of the Church of Our Saviour, Lebanon Springs, officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, West Stephentown.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the W. A. Adams Auxillary cancer fund in care of Mrs. Gladys Larkin, Averill Park.

William David Ingraham

A former North Adams resident, William David Ingraham, 84 died yesterday at the Crestwood Nursing home in Lenox, following a lingering illness due to his age. A native of Lanesboro, Mr. Ingraham had lived in North Adams for about 45 years. His wife the former Mary C. Sweeney, died in 1948 and about a year later he went to Pittsfield to make his home with a niece and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. John Shadick of 125 Plunkett street. While in North Adams he was employed as a gardener for the late Charles H. Cutting and later worked for his daughters, Mrs. Ralph N. Dennett and Mrs. Garrett P. Fitch. He attended St. Francis church here.

He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Samuel Dorgan and Mrs. Clifford McKeon, both of Pittsfield; and four nieces including Mrs. Shadick.

The body has been taken to the San Soucie funeral home where friends may call from 7 to 9 this evening and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 tomorrow. Funeral services will take place at 9 Thursday morning with a solemn high mass of requiem in St. Francis church. Burial will be in the family lot in Cheshire cemetery.
